My Top 5 Obsessions This Week

Greetings to all of my semi constant readers. Hope the summer is treating you well. Here are some of the  hottest offerings out there.

1) Daytime Divas inspired by Star Jones' book Satan's Sisters revolves around "another " daytime female driven talk show called The Lunch Hour. This hilarious VH1 show centers around Maxine in  the left chair played with her usual tongue in chic by the wickedly talented Vanessa Williams. The constant behind the scenes battle to take her place by her underlings -Tichinna Arnold, Camille Guaty, Fiona Gubelman and Chloe Bridges make this hour romp a summer must see.

2) Concert for America at the fabulously remodeled Curran Theatre was a once in a lifetime show and the good news is it is still touring in a city near you. Raising money for five national organizations to protect human rights makes it even more attractive. Tony winners Faith Prince and Alan Cumming both gave knockout performances with Prince giving a bravura version of her hit Adelaide's Lament from Guys and Dolls. the amazing Kate Flannery and Jane Lynch brought the music and comedy only they can bring.( we might be seeing them in San Francisco around the holidays. Fingers crossed. ). Seth Rudetsky, Paula West and our beloved Armistead Maupin all contributed to the magical evening along with The San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus. Last mention was the joyful version of King of The Forest from The Wizard of Oz by Kevin Chamberlain.

3) Glow also known as Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling an 80's staple is the newest Netflix offering. An unlikely cast of characters led by a crazy cokehead director played winsomely by Marc Maron is a genre we have not seen yet and it has found the perfect home with Netflix. The cast is a perfect mix headed by Alison Brie (Mad Men) with all the hi jinx and hot tempers of a motley crew of misfits finding their wrestling personas Well crafted storytelling with the perfect blend of comedy and drama make this my summer favorite.

4) Lorde has done it again with Melodrama her newest offering. With thought provoking lyrics and a lush arrangement this sophomore album proves she will continue to be a lasting performer. Green Light is the first single appropriately and it builds and builds. Liability, Supercut and The Louvre are standouts in a album of brilliant songs.

5) Duran Duran should be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The Saturday night performance at The Masonic in San Francisco is all the proof needed. Roger Taylor, Nick Rhodes, John Taylor and Simon Le Bon rocked the house opening with Paper Gods and closing with Rio. But what came between was all the greatness . Simon was on fire strutting and owning the stage as only he can do with a mashup of (Reach Up of the) Sunrise and New Moon on Monday and Girls on Film. A touching moment came when Le Bon dedicated Ordinary World to his mother who recently passed.  This band is one of the best concert bands around and still going strong.
