My Top 5 Obsessions This Week

Greetings to all of my semi-constant readers. Not a lot going on between The Academy Awards and the early days of Spring. But I have found a few nuggets.

1) The Edge of Seventeen starring the luminous and wildly talented Hailee Steinfeld as a troubled teen dealing with family and navigating high school. It is so good to see Woody Harrelson as a compassionate teacher in a great supporting role as well as Kyra Sedgwick and Split's Haley Lu Richardson. Out on DVD.

2)  When We Rise the new TV mini-series featuring Rachel Griffiths , Mary Louise Parker, Guy Pearce, Carrie Preston , Rosie O'Donnell played out in eight parts is based on San Francisco's own Cleve Jones'bestseller. The sweeping story of the United States' Gay Rights movement from Stonewall and 1970s San Francisco just as the AIDS crisis hit. I was lucky enough to see some of the filming in the Castro and it captures the period perfectly.

3) Feud- Ryan Murphy's newest Must Watch  docudrama is the famous feud  between Bette Davis and Joan Crawford shown in  8 glorious  episodes on FX. Ryan has a  penchant for high camp and Susan Sarandon and Jessica Lange tear up the screen in one of the most famous Hollywood rivalries  between actresses. Set in 1962 during the filming of Whatever Happened to Baby Jane . The actresses 54 and 57 who were considered washed up  and unable to make Box Office Draw could have been friends instead of the bitter enemies they were pushed into being. A definitive must see.

4)  Black Stallion Winery has got to be one of the more picturesque wineries in Napa on The Silverado Trail. I was there recently to pick up a few bottles of Chardonnay and the staff is amazing and helpful. Located on the grounds of a historic equestrian center, it is breathtaking. They have delicious reds and tasty Chardonnays and it is the perfect place to spend an afternoon.

5) There is a very unusual podcast available called Missing Richard Simmons created by filmmaker Dan Taberski. On February 15th 2014 Richard Simmons disappeared . He stopped teaching his exercise classes  at Slimmons and rumors of his being held hostage by his housekeeper have flooded the internet. No one knows why he disappeared from the public eye and Dan has through a series of interviews tried to piece together what really happened and the mystery seems to deepen. Check it out now on Stitcher.
